Big Brother is Watching

Tuesday, 15th November 2011

George Orwell's classic "1984" has never been more relevant than today, here in the UK.
Everywhere we go, by car, train, bus or plane, CCTV cameras watch us.
They cover every road, every station, every building!
Our mobile phones track our every movement, ANPR logs our car registration,
all credit and debit card transactions confirm our daily life. The state knows our date
of birth, where we live, and how much we earn.
Put simply, we have no secrets from the state.
Some people say "if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear".
I don't agree. I think the world of total surveillance we live in now is frightening.
In our present day democracy, we have freedom of expression, freedom of religion,
freedom of thought, freedom of movement, and the total freedom to change the government.
These are hard-won rights, fought for since Magna Carta in 1215, by countless generations of people
determined to be free. But right now, total surveillance rules. And it's not nice!
